Sell Your Solar

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Commercial terms depend on each system and site, so these answers explain how things generally work rather than promising specific outcomes.
Can I sell a solar system that is already installed?

Potentially, yes. The service is designed for businesses that already own a commercial solar installation and want to understand whether the system could be sold as an asset.

Whether a sale is possible depends on who owns the system, its condition and performance, any finance or other agreements attached to it, and whether the site arrangements suit an ongoing supply agreement. An assessment is the first step in finding out.

Does my system need to be at least 100 kW?

Our primary focus is commercial and industrial installations of around 100 kWp (DC) and above, because larger systems are generally more practical to assess and transact.

If your system is smaller, or you are not sure of its size, you are still welcome to enquire. We will let you know whether it is likely to suit.

Can I continue using the electricity?

That is the intention of the model. Where a buyback proceeds, the parties may enter into an onsite power purchase agreement (PPA) under which your business buys electricity generated by the system.

The price, term and conditions of any such agreement would be negotiated and documented. Nothing is agreed until both parties sign.

How is the system valued?

Any valuation would consider factors such as installed capacity, age, condition, historical and expected generation, remaining useful life, warranties, site arrangements and the terms of any ongoing electricity agreement.

We do not publish standard prices. If your system appears suitable, any proposal would follow a technical and commercial assessment.

What if the solar installation is financed?

Tell us in the enquiry form. Existing finance, leases or third-party agreements may affect whether and how a sale could proceed, and the financier's consent may be required. We would work through this with you during the assessment.

What if I lease the building?

Many businesses operate from leased premises. The solar system, the building and the business may be owned by different parties, so we need to understand who owns what and what the lease allows.

Landlord consent and lease terms are typically important for any arrangement involving equipment on the roof.

Who maintains the system after a sale?

Under a typical asset sale the new owner would take on ownership responsibilities, which may include maintenance. The specific responsibilities, including site access, would be set out in the agreements negotiated between the parties.

What happens if the business relocates?

Relocation, sale of the premises or a change in tenancy are important scenarios that any agreement would need to address. How they are handled would depend on the negotiated terms.

Will my electricity costs change?

They may. Solar electricity bought under a PPA would be priced under that agreement, while your remaining grid electricity, network charges, demand charges and other bill components would continue under your retail arrangements.

Any comparison should look at the whole electricity bill, not just the solar portion. We do not promise savings; any proposal would set out the proposed terms so you can assess them with your own advisers.

Is there any obligation to proceed?

No. Requesting an assessment does not commit you to anything. You can decide not to proceed at any stage before signing an agreement.

How long does an assessment take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the installation and how quickly documentation is available. We will discuss expected timing with you once we have reviewed your enquiry.

What documentation will I need?

For an initial enquiry you do not need any documents. Helpful items include the original solar installation invoice or contract, system specification or design documents, inverter or monitoring data, and recent electricity bills.

You can upload documents with your enquiry if they are handy, or provide them later.

No obligation
